New life is a miracle. It seriously is. And I believe it’s part of a divine purpose that is more deeper and wondrous than we can imagine.
Here’s our story and here’s why I say this. For we feel privileged that our life has helped create another.
Because my wife, Joselli is pregnant.
And that’s something we don’t take lightly. We know that this opportunity to be a parent is a gift, and we treasure it.
A new life story.
The divine purpose I speak of was revealed in the most ordinary circumstances.
It came to us in the form of a frozen pizza.
I was out, so Joselli had dinner in. And with that, she ate and ate. Not half a pizza mind you, as is usually the case, but a whole. Something she never does, until that night.
That was the first sign.
‘What if?’ My scientist wife immediately thought and did the sensible thing. She ran an experiment.
And the result came through true and clear blue.
Fulfilling my part in this miraculous new life.
So I was working late that day and upon arriving home, I was greeted by this curious little fella, sitting innocently on the corner of our bed:
I read the note. A couple of times actually.
Like the biggest wow I’ve had in a long while of wows.
That was quite a night, being greeted with my wife’s beaming smile, the cuddly toy with his note and a dawning realisation of what this all could mean.
That we might actually have an ‘extra’ in the family.
And my being a Father.
I was taken aback. And as strange as it seems, I didn’t expect it. We’d been trying for a few months and were beginning to doubt if it would ever happen.
But it did. And I felt a feeling in me so deep.
I saw how my life is now inextricably linked to another. And that this is a causal link in a much bigger chain; looking back and now reaching forward.
A link that connects me to countless generations before, in a great line of being.
So how does the possibility of being a dad make me feel?
Well, for me it has provided meaning and purpose in a way that is felt, but not easily expressed. It’s hard to fathom.
Not that my life was lacking meaning, far from it. But this has added something richer and fuller.
A wondrous life plan for parents to be.
So, do you also believe a new life conceived is meant to be?
It is a miracle but a fragile one. Sometimes hard to create and sometimes sadly lost in the trying.
It’s why we feel humbled and don’t take this lightly while believing that there is a higher purpose in all of this.
Part of a wondrous plan.
What is this?
That’s the next part of the story.
A few little signs point to a plan and purpose.
In the time I’ve known Joselli I can say remarkable ‘coincidences’ happen to her.
And I can’t explain it rationally.
I’ll tell you what happened and you can decide.
A month before the pregnancy a friend of Joselli’s from Brazil, who didn’t know we were trying for a baby, had a dream.
In that dream, she saw that Joselli was worried about not being able to have a baby. But in the dream to tell her that she shouldn’t be concerned, because God will do it.
She didn’t know our situation. She didn’t know the worries we had. So coincidence? Quite possibly.
But it gets a little stranger.
Earlier on the day, Joselli discovered her pregnancy, she received a message from a student colleague from many years ago. They were not in regular contact.
In this message, she says ‘I just thought of you and wanted to share this’. It was a reflection on what it means to be a mum and that the sacrifices it entails bring a bigger reward.
Like, how did this friend know? The thing is she didn’t.
But there’s something more. The other friend with the dream had another! And in this dream, she saw Joselli visiting Brazil, with a little girl.
We had no knowledge of the gender of our baby.
The revealing of the wondrous life plan.
A few weeks later, at our baby’s gender reveal party. A dream came true for both of us.
Why do I mention this? To be honest, I’m a little embarrassed. We are no more thought of or loved by God for receiving a little sign every now and then.
These things are gifts of grace believers can experience.
No, I believe there’s a bigger reason. And now I know why because I’m meant to share this story with you.
Your life was meant to be.
You are not an accident or even a surprise in God’s eyes. No matter the circumstances good or bad around your arrival into this life. Or even anything that has happened to you since.
Two ‘proofs’ of the wondrous life plan.
Because your life is a miracle and part of a wondrous plan.
Do you doubt it?
I can prove this from God’s book of nature and His book of scripture.
At the sacred moment of conception, you began your existence as just one tiny cell. A unique cell that has never existed before as you now had a set of chromosomes from your Father and from your Mother.
This astonishing moment of conception has been observed by scientists. It looks like a little ‘spark’.
And today, your body is now made of an estimated 32 trillion cells (31.2tn more cells than the known stars in the universe).
Your life is a miracle, wondrous and meant to be.
That’s how the book of nature reads. The book of scripture tells it as this:
“My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.”
Psalm 139: 15-16.
It’s all part of the plan for us.
And life is all about discovering this wondrous plan in Him.
We may well be a cosmic blink of an eye. Or a tiny thread in a bigger quilt called humanity. But what a beautiful thread each of us is.
A name was known before our own.
So I’m about to be a dad. But I know that I’m part of a bigger plan and purpose for our little daughter. We’re just catching up with it. And month by month we see it unveiled before us.
But one thing I’ve discovered is really that our baby’s sex was decided long before we knew, and so was her name. All her days are ordained for her.
So we look forward to welcoming you, little Julia. It is but a few months.
Your name was known before the world began.
Your new life reveals His wondrous plan.
